Help bring the Bakerloo line to south east London

Improve transport links and improve journey times
Create 1000s of new homes and jobs
Improve accessibility making it easier and safer to travel
Reduce air pollution and congestion on the roads by increasing capacity on the tube

The most exciting transport improvement in south east London is on the brink of coming to Southwark and Lewisham.

We need your help to make it happen.

The Mayor of London has committed to extending the Bakerloo line through Southwark and Lewisham. This will dramatically improve transport links, relieving the load on the bus and overground network, and making the wider area more accessible than it’s ever been before.

But it's not just about travel - the extension will also deliver thousands of new homes and jobs. It will boost the local economy and bring huge benefits to residents and businesses.

The Bakerloo line extension

A smiling woman in a hat

Southwark and Lewisham councils have been campaigning for the Bakerloo line extension for a number of years, both to improve transport in our boroughs and to help build much needed new homes. The Bakerloo line extension is fundamental to plans for growth and development in Southwark and Lewisham, as well as bringing wider benefits to London.

Transport for London (TfL) has set out plans to extend the tube line from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham via Old Kent Road and New Cross Gate. A further extension of the Bakerloo line beyond Lewisham has also been proposed, which could bring the tube to Ladywell, Catford and Lower Sydenham. TfL has carried out a number of consultations on the Bakerloo line extension and thousands of people have responded, overwhelmingly in support of the extension.

Southwark and Lewisham Councils are working with the Mayor and TfL to build a strong case for the Bakerloo line extension. If central government approves plans for the extension and the funding needed is secured, construction could begin as early as 2025.

Old Kent Road

"The Bakerloo line upgrade and extension is the missing piece of south east London transport infrastructure. It will enable an additional 10,500 homes to be built in Southwark, alone, and be of huge benefit to residents and businesses along the entire line and London as a whole. Given the urgent need for new homes, jobs and green spaces, it’s vital that we Back the Bakerloo." Cllr Helen Dennis, Southwark Cabinet Member

The Bakerloo line extension will transform the lives of thousands of people who live and work around Old Kent Road. Extending the Bakerloo line will help build an additional 10,500 new homes in Old Kent Road and enable the homes to be delivered much more quickly.

The Old Kent Road is a unique opportunity to tackle London’s housing crisis; overall 20,000 new homes will be built in the area, including 7,000 genuinely affordable homes, and over 10,000 new jobs will be created. This will have a positive impact on the local economy and will benefit new and existing Old Kent Road businesses and residents.

The majority of residents who took part in Southwark Council’s consultation on our plans for Old Kent Road backed the Bakerloo line extension. We want two new tube stations to be built on Old Kent Road as part of the extension.

New Cross Gate and Lewisham

“Extending the Bakerloo line will help 100,000’s of south Londoners get around easier. It will help people get to work, create jobs and most importantly, reduce carbon emissions. It’s time to Back the Bakerloo.” - Mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan.

The Bakerloo line extension will connect Lewisham to the tube network for the first time in its history and improve the lives of thousands of people who live and work in the borough.

The arrival of new Bakerloo line stations at New Cross Gate and Lewisham will mean faster journey times to central London, a wider choice of destinations and an underground train every two to three minutes.

The Bakerloo line extension will provide additional capacity on Lewisham’s public transport network and reduce overcrowding on buses and trains. It will also make Lewisham greener, reducing congestion, CO2 emissions and improving air quality particularly along New Cross Road.

Bringing the Bakerloo line to Lewisham will bring economic benefits and opportunities for everyone in the borough with 6,000 more jobs and 27,500 homes in Lewisham’s opportunity areas including new homes which are genuinely affordable.

Wider benefits to London

The Bakerloo line extension will deliver wider benefits across London, improving transport links and supporting growth in homes and jobs. Trains and signalling on the Bakerloo line will be upgraded at the same time as the extension, which will increase capacity on the existing line. Across the Bakerloo line, the extension and upgrade could support the delivery of over 100,000 new homes and over 130,000 new jobs across London.

The Bakerloo line extension will also:

  • Improve transport connections and reduce journey times
  • Improve accessibility, enabling residents to travel more easily and safely
  • Improve congestion on the roads by increasing capacity on the tube, reducing air pollution and CO2 emissions
  • Free up capacity on other lines and buses, making journeys less crowded and more pleasant
